چکیده

R. S. Davis We report a new determination of the Universal Gas Constant R: (8.314471 ±0.OOOOI4)J.mol1K1• The uncertainty in the new value is 1.7 ppm (standard error), a factor of 5 smaller than the uncertainty in the best previous value. The gas constant was determined from measurements of the speed of sound in argon as a function of pressure at the temperature of the triple point of water. The speed of sound was measured with a spherical resonator whose volume was determined by weighing the mercury required to fill it at the temperature of the tri~le point. The molar mass of the argon was determined by comparing the speed of sound in it to the speed of sound in a standard sample of argon of accurately known chemical and isotoptic composition.

Measurement of the Universal Gas Constant Using an Acoustic Resonator

Competition is a great motivator. The 1988 measurement of the universal gas constant R at NIST [1] was stimulated by an error made at a rival national metrology institute, Great Britain’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL). In 1976, a group at NPL reported a “new” value for the universal gas constant R that had a standard uncertainty of 8.4 ppm (1 ppm = 1 part in 10). The “new” value was 159 pp...

Thermodynamic Temperatures of the Triple Points of Mercury and Gallium and in the Interval 217 K to 303 K

National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001 We measured the acoustic resonance frequencies of an argon-filled spherical cavity and the microwave resonance frequencies of the same cavity when evacuated. The microwave data were used to deduce the thermal expansion of the cavity and the acoustic data were fitted to a temperature-pressure surface to deduce zeropressu...

Determination of the Boltzmann constant using a quasi-spherical acoustic resonator.

The paper reports a new experiment to determine the value of the Boltzmann constant, k(B)=1.3806477(17)×10(-23) J K(-1), with a relative standard uncertainty of 1.2 parts in 10(6). k(B) was deduced from measurements of the velocity of sound in argon, inside a closed quasi-spherical cavity at a temperature of the triple point of water. The shape of the cavity was achieved using an extremely accu...

Acousto-Refrigerator with an Adjustable Mechanical Resonator (RESEARCH NOTE)

Thermoacoustics describes energy conversion processes, activated by interaction temperature oscillation, accompanying the pressure oscillation in a sound wave, with solid boundaries. In ordinary experience this interaction of sound and heat cannot be observed, because of the very low temperature differences, but under suitable conditions, it can be emphasized and amplified to create remarkable ...

Hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of sodium borohydride using sulfonated porous carbon as reagent/catalyst

The hydrolysis of sodium borohydride as a source of hydrogen gas is studied at different mole ratios of H+ to NaBH4. The sulfonated porous carbon (SPC) is used as a source of hydrogen ion and catalyst. It is found that the sulfonated porous carbon exhibits high activity for the hydrolysis of NaBH4 to generate hydrogen gas at room temperature in comparison to Amberlyst-15 and Nafion-NR50. The ki...
